Planning for Silent Cinema Sunday - These are not real problems....

Last weekend life got in the way and I missed my Silent Cinema Sunday.  Threw off my whole week.  Sad.  #FirstWorldProblems
Anyway, so now I'm so excited about actually having time to do what I want tomorrow that I'm all over the place and can't decide what I'm gonna do!!  I'm so torn!
I want to have a Renee Adoree day, BUT I'm still waiting for my delivery of Mr Wu.  I want to start off with Daydreams(Buster makes everything amazing!), then watch The Pagan(my first Ramon Novarro!), then The Big Parade(which is supposed to be one of the best silents ever made - show me what you can do girl!), then finish up with Mr Wu(cause I love love love Lon Chaney).  Alas, Mr Wu is not here yet, so I'm just babbling....
Or I could have a Douglas Fairbanks day.  I have a really good documentary that I've been meaning to watch....  Followed by When the Clouds Roll By, Reggie Mixes In, Flirting With Fate, and maybe The Three Musketeers.  I've seen The Black Pirate too many times, so I'm not including it.
Or Pola Negri....Sappho, The Wildcat, Barbed Wire, The Eyes of the Mummy....  Sigh.
Or Richard Barthelmess!  The Enchanted Cottage, The Idol Dancer, Drop Kick, and Tol'able David.  Then I could close up with Midnight Alibi, which I know is a talkie, but Ann Dvorak!!  And I can finally hear Richard's voice!  I sometimes round out my Silent Cinema Sundays with their voices.  Full circle and all, you know.
Too many decisions!  So many good movies just waiting for me!  Life is hard.

The Wizard of Oz Collection for Silent Cinema Sunday

So I choose the Wizard of Oz Collection for Silent Cinema Sunday today.  I've been waiting to have a block of time so that I could watch all of them together and today was a quiet morning.
They really weren't that bad.  I'm not picky though.  Keep that in mind!!  I manage to enjoy myself no matter what I'm doing! Sometimes, just the act of doing something is enjoyable for me.  It's a nice place to be.
Cool things I learned about these movies and the actors:
Mildred Harris is in two of them: His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz and The Magic Cloak of Oz.  She was Charlie Chaplin's first wife.  Many suspect that she cheated on him with Alla Nazimova(I love Nazimova.  I can't help it).  She ended up dying young(42) of pneumonia following abdominal surgery.
Oliver Hardy, or Ollie to those of us that love him, was in The Wizard of Oz as The Tin Man.
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy(played by Dorothy Dwan) and The Scarecrow(played by Larry Semon) were married in real life. Many people believed that Larry Semon faked is own death.  It's since been proved false cause they finally found a death certificate.  Bummer.
Harold Lloyd and Hal Roach both have teeny tiny uncredited rolls in The Patchwork Girl of Oz.
The Patchwork Girl was actually a man.  A French man.  Named Pierre.
Juanita Hansen who played Queen Zixi in The Magic Cloak of Oz, ended up getting burned by scalding water in a New York hotel.  She won a settlement from the incident and took a break from films.  She also had a terrible cocaine addiction that helped to ruin her career.  She went on to campaign for drug treatment and founded the Juanita Hansen Foundation to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs.  She also got herself tangled up in Evelyn Nesbit's divorce from Jack Clifford.  Evelyn was The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.
Josef Swickard, who played Prime Minister Kruel in The Wizard of Oz, was married to Margaret Campbell. She was raped and murdered by their son.  Swickard died seven months after his wife of natural causes. It's rumored that he jumped off the Hollywood sign like Peg Entwistle.  False.  Bummer.
It seems no one(but maybe me) liked any of these movies.  Ever.  They came out to terrible reviews and terrible attendance.  Wonder why they kept making them?  Me too.

My own private traditions

I really like traditions.
There are a few things that I like to do with my movies.  A couple of days of the week I live for.  Saturdays and Sundays.
Every Saturday night after the sun goes down is Vintage Horror Saturday.  I like to sit in the dark and watch vintage horror.  Be it Vincent Price or dear darling Bela.  Bad or good, doesn't matter, just vintage.  And lets face it, they're mostly bad, but I still seem to like them.  I try to make sure to watch at least one every Saturday.  Sometimes I can fit in two, but I often can't seem to sit through that many.  Not too sure why.
I call every Sunday my Silent Cinema Sunday.  This is by far my favorite day of the week.  I get up super early(maybe around 4), get my coffee, and enjoy my movies.  I usually do it up big.  I start with cartoons and/or silent shorts, and then watch the films.  I usually pick one actor or one theme per Sunday.  If I can find a documentary about what I'm watching, I'll usually watch that first.  As the sun comes up, I pull the thick curtains that I had put in my movie room and keep going.  You can't watch silent films in the daylight!
While I'm watching any movie, I look up everything I can about the film and actors.  Sometimes I go deep, sometimes not so much.  Like I've said, I'm intrigued by the lives of these actors and strange stories behind the movies.  I guess that's what brings them to life for me.  And I love learning.  It makes these so much more than movies for me.  I have to multitask while doing something, I can't focus otherwise.  Strange, but true.
I'm seriously thinking about adding a Mystery Movie Monday.  I have a love of William Powell movies and am having a hard time fitting them in.  If I make a tradition of it, I'll be sure to!  Or maybe call it My Favorite Men Mondays....  That way it doesn't have to be a mystery and I can get in some of those gangster movies I've been meaning to watch.  Or if I feel like, it I can throw in Mr Peabody and the Mermaid, and it will still count!  ;-)
